Overview

Yahoo is dedicated to ensuring our electronic communications service is accessible for everyone. This statement is prepared in accordance with the Irish European Union (Accessibility Requirements of Products and Services) Regulations 2023 (SI 636/2023) (the EAA), to provide information on how our electronic communications service meets the accessibility requirements of the EAA. The schedule to this statement outlines the obligations that Yahoo is subject to arising from the EAA as a provider of an electronic communications service.

This statement applies to Yahoo’s electronic communications service offered to users in the European Union (EU) known as Yahoo Mail. This statement is also for the purpose of providing information to users about the functioning of Yahoo Mail, and is provided in the following accessible ways:

  • it is available via more than one sensory channel
  • it is presented in an understandable and perceivable way
  • it is available in text formats that can be used to generate alternative assistive formats to be presented in different ways by the reader and via more than one sensory channel
  • it is presented in fonts of adequate size and suitable shape, which take into account foreseeable conditions of use and it uses sufficient contrast, as well as adjustable spacing between letters, lines and paragraphs
  • it is presented in a consistent and adequate way so as to be perceivable, operable, understandable and robust

Yahoo Mail is guided by the technical standard for websites and mobile apps, EN 301 549 v.3.2.1 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) version 2.2.

Overview of the service

Yahoo Mail is an email service from Yahoo that can be used to:

  • Send and receive email messages
  • Store and organise your messages

It's available for use on various devices that include:

  • Computers
  • Smartphones
  • Tablets

To open a new account and use Yahoo Mail, users can navigate to the Yahoo account creation page either by using a general search engine and entering a search query such as “open Yahoo Mail account” or by using Yahoo’s own help pages which provide instructions on creating an account. The process of account creation requires users to provide their name, to choose a prefix (username) for their new Yahoo Mail email address, to create a password, and to provide their date of birth. The user must tick a box to indicate that they accept the Yahoo Terms of Service before an account is created. The service operates successfully with many different types of assistive technologies. No aspects of Yahoo Mail would prevent someone entirely from using Yahoo Mail due to accessibility issues.

Content and components of Yahoo Mail are accessible through platform features and technology designed for accessibility, such as screen readers. There are numerous accessibility features and functionality within Yahoo Mail which include:

  • Using a keyboard, a modern screen reader, or speech recognition software (on a computer or phone)
  • Using features with browser zoom set to 200%
  • Keyboard shortcuts for most major tasks and features
  • AI-powered summaries
  • Spelling and grammar correction
  • Change colour and layout of your inbox
  • Content is optimised for ease of understanding and cognition
  • Consistent placement of help resources
  • Customer Care agents trained in accessibility features (for Mail Plus users)

Monitoring and continuous improvement

We will regularly monitor the accessibility features and compliance of Yahoo Mail.

The EAA provides for harmonised standards which will address some of the requirements set out in the EAA. While these have, to date, not been published, we will review them when they are and may implement some of these to the extent that they are relevant to Yahoo Mail.

Support services

Yahoo Mail paid-for subscriptions provide certain support services, including chat, email, and phone support. Where appropriate these support services will guide users to this statement in order to provide information on the accessibility of Yahoo Mail in the accessible ways described above. (Note that the Yahoo Mail support services themselves are compatible with some assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers) and keyboard navigation.)

Schedule – Applicable EAA Requirements
  1. General accessibility requirements:
    1. ensuring the accessibility of the products used in the provision of the service;
    2. providing information, in the following manner, about the functioning of the service, and where products are used in the provision of the service, its link to these products as well as information about their accessibility characteristics and interoperability with assistive devices and facilities:
      1. making the information available via more than one sensory channel;
      2. presenting the information in an understandable way;
      3. presenting the information to users in ways they can perceive;
      4. making the information content available in text formats that can be used to generate alternative assistive formats to be presented in different ways by the users and via more than one sensory channel;
      5. presenting in fonts of adequate size and suitable shape, taking into account foreseeable conditions of use and using sufficient contrast, as well as adjustable spacing between letters, lines and paragraphs;
      6. supplementing any non-textual content with an alternative presentation of that content; and
      7. providing electronic information needed in the provision of the service in a consistent and adequate way by making it perceivable, operable, understandable and robust.
    3. making websites, including the related online applications, and mobile device-based services, including mobile applications, accessible in a consistent and adequate way by making them perceivable, operable, understandable and robust, and
    4. where available, support services (help desks, call centres, technical support, relay services and training services) providing information on the accessibility of the service and its compatibility with assistive technologies, in accessible modes of communication.
